What is a Trade Union?

A trade union is an institution of laborers or workers which aims at improving the working conditions of the laborers. The term trade union is commonly used in British English. The equivalent term in American English is labor union. A trade union or a labor union is formed to create a lobby of workers to negotiate better working conditions. Trade unions are used as a tool to bargain the demands of its member workers through its leadership with the employer. A trade union leader is therefore a representative of the members of the union. Usually a trade union leader is one of the members nominated by the union to negotiate labor contracts or fagforening tilbud with the employer.                                                                          Fagforening

A fagforening or a labor union can touch upon any area of negotiation as long as it is concerned with the laborers who are a member of the union. The union empowers an individual laborer to convey his concerns and expectations to the employer towards leadership and benefit from what is known as the power of collective bargaining.

The collective bargaining is used by the fagforeninger to negotiate with employers with respect to any and every concern of the workers including wages, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring and termination, promotion of workers, work rules, overtime, benefits, workplace safety and compensation, and policies concerning the laborers. However, the scope of a labor union is not limited to aforementioned list of areas alone. It can encompass everything in relation to the work life of the members.
